Process evaluations are really important in helping to understand how (oral) health interventions work.

They are particularly useful for interventions that include a number of interacting components operating in different ways & also when interventions address complex problems.

Those were the days

We don’t need more research on oral health inequalities. We know they exist, and we know they are bad. We need to do something about them. We need translation of evidence into policy.

It’s about perspective ……..

Why is Dentistry important?

If you happen to be unlucky and the 'peer reviewer' asks for a revision, add 5 more days

Maximum timeline from manuscript submission to publication

= 15 days

A predatory dental journal in 5 steps

1. Take the name of #1 journal in the field (Journal of Dental Research) and amend slightly

2. Accept manuscripts via email

3. Extra payment of $99 for a 'special fast service'

4. 'Peer review' in 5 days

5. Publication in 7 days

I was in Norway this week as opponent in a public PhD defence

So different from PhD vivas in the UK - lasts a day, with a lecture & disputation, & family, friends & the public attend.

They have to be of the most inspirational, rewarding & heart warming roles in academia 👏

“Our inclusive methodologies enabled autistic children with diverse communication needs to participate. Such methodologies improve the representation of autistic children in oral health research”

This is such an important project & I’ve really enjoyed being a small part of it.

This is a really important study. Why?

It’s the 1st multi-centre trial of a behaviour change intervention promoting toothbrushing for preventing tooth decay in children including clinical, cost, & quality of life outcomes 👍

‘The old boy’s club’ in dental academia

Of 159 chief editors across 124 journals, 131 (82%) are men.

“There is an urgent need to address the lack of equity, diversity & inclusivity of editorial teams across #dental journals”

You can't be what you can't see👇

Trying to convince a dental student today of the role #psychology can play in many areas of #dentistry

I was reminded of why we decided to write this piece 12 years ago 😜

The dental recovery plan published by the government in Feb 2024 aimed to increase access to NHS dentistry services in England.

The extra £200 million was intended to deliver 1.5 million additional NHS #dentistry treatments (or 2.5 million appointments) in 2024-25.

Will it?

Spoiler Alert: No

Did you know, globally, 13% of children experience dental anxiety?

We are currently running a 4-year RCT of a guided self-help CBT intervention to reduce dental anxiety in children.

The trial includes 600 children in 30 primary dental care sites in the UK

Anthropology, archaeology and teeth. A fascinating combination and a great paper👇

Despite the value of teeth as biospecimens, little is understood about the cultural beliefs & practices surrounding exfoliated teeth

Given that the care home setting is highly complex & many factors will affect the successful #implementation of the intervention, we are also conducting a parallel process evaluation

This process evaluation will be key to understanding potential pathways to any #oralhealth improvement & roll-out

Oral health in care homes is very often poor, overlooked & residents access to dental care non-existent.

We are currently conducting a NIHR funded trial (the SENIOR trial) in care homes in Wales, Northern Ireland & England to test whether #dental skill mix can improve resident’s #oralhealth
