Even if folks think this about religion, the dismissive mocking attitude toward *studying* religion is part of the problem. Love it or hate it, religion matters A LOT and isn’t going away anytime soon.

Thrilled and honored that my book Religion for Realists was given the 2025 Distinguished Book Award by @sssreligion.bsky.social last night.
It’s vital that we understand religion and religious people. The social sciences are remiss to ignore either.
Hire more religion specialists.

Already some fascinating participant observation tonight at the TPUSA event at OU. Way more middle-aged adults than college students. But a lot of the latter too.

Today seems like an auspicious day to remind folks that next week I'll be at Penn State delivering a De Jong Lecture on the contemporary pronatalist movement. Demographers Shelley Clark & Nancy Luke will also give lectures on pronatalism.

Got my copy on audible today and already well into it. Really fascinating insights into the vast literature on evangelical parenting and its consequences. I’m sure this will resonate with many evangelicals and exvangelicals. Well done, @mburtwrites.bsky.social & @kkramermcginnis.bsky.social.

Taken from The Knowledge Polity by @pauldjupe.bsky.social Amy Erica Smith, & @aesokhey.bsky.social, which I'm sharing in my grad course on The Sociology of Academic Publishing.
Median number of reviews for sociologists (in 2017) was 3 reviews with the avg. pulled up by outliers. Makes me wanna cry.

Excited to see the new paperback edition of Addicted to Lust *with a new preface*! I’m proud of the way the arguments in here about “moral incongruence” and pornography use have only received more empirical support in the past 6 years. Great deal on Amazon!

Important new FREE study by Amy Brooke Grauley. Experiments show when Christian leaders warn Christians against Christian nationalism, they're less likely to identify with it, especially if they don't have strong views on it yet. Effects are weaker in the opposite direction.

But it's not all seculars; it's *sorted* seculars (and to a lesser degree sorted evangelicals). When atheists/agnostics are also very liberal or Democrat, their knowledge advantage is highest; less so among mods/Indys; but no difference if they're conservative/Republican. 4/ doi.org/10.1093/sf/s...

"But is the secular advantage in political knowledge about more education?" Not really. Yes, most religious groups catch up to seculars at the highest levels of education (folks with post-grad degrees), but seculars tend to score higher at every other level of education. 3/ doi.org/10.1093/sf/s...

Example: other than a fairly difficult question most adults get wrong about choosing POTUS in an electoral college tie, atheists/agnostics tend to score significantly highest on Qs of civics (e.g., Senate term limit) & current politics (e.g., who controls Senate or House). 2/ doi.org/10.1093/sf/s...

🧵 Who's the most informed about American politics? Very lefty seculars.
My new FREE study @sfjournal.bsky.social finds atheists/agnostics, especially if they are politically sorted, score higher on knowledge of basic civics & current politics than other groups. 1/ academic.oup.com/sf/advance-a...

Religiosity & gender attitudes go hand-in-hand. But which influences which?
New study by McElroy et al. shows earlier gender views tend to predict religious trajectories more than the reverse (except for young women).
Once again:
Cultural/political conflicts --> Religion

I love that the “how hard can you punch?” machine at the Minnesota State Fair has to have a sign on it that says “No Head-Butting.”

Learned at the Minnesota State Fair this morning. State lakes have lost 10-14 days of ice cover in the past 50 years.

New from me & @andrew-whitehead.bsky.social at @jssreligion.bsky.social. We find parents who want teachers to lead kids in Christian prayers are more likely to endorse solutions to school shootings that involve MORE guns in school (armed teachers & security).
