A bit misty, and from a distance, but a nice clear view of an Indian rhino, the other main wildlife target of the trip

Major goal of this holiday was to see a gharial in the wild - was pleasantly surprised to see several while here, in the rivers bordering Chitwan

These cats have seen things that would haunt your worst nightmares … some of the most terrifying taxidermy I’ve seen in a while …

I had no idea it was going to be so easy to spot the elusive yeti, but here’s one in plain sight lurking among the displays at the International Mountain Museum, Pokhara

Back after a whirlwind trip to the Nopcsa meeting - lots of interesting talks on his life and legacy and some good chances to hatch new research projects, as well as a couple of hours to run around Budapest
October 3, 2025 at 6:50 PM
In a sunny autumnal Budapest (my first time in Hungary) for the Nopcsa memorial meeting. Nice to see Attila Ösi, Eric Buffetaut and others in attendance

Always nice to see the Cuvier memorial on the Rue Linné in Paris. My fave restaurant here is not far away, on the Rue de Blainville - hard to image such homage to natural historians in the UK

I’d missed this sad news, noting the passing of Michael Waldman (obit by @elsa-panciroli.bsky.social here: www.theguardian.com/science/2025...). He discovered the Middle Jurassic sites on Skye that various teams have worked since & we named the Skye turtle Eileanchelys waldmani in his honour in 2009

Just spent a fun day at Crocodiles of the World, near Whitney (Oxon) with @rorylcooper.bsky.social looking at croc eggs for a new project

Was leafing through Nopcsa’s notebooks @nhmlibraryarchives.bsky.social yesterday and came upon these rather charming prosauropods, which he’d either traced or sketched. That’s his handwriting too … #fossilfriday #dinosaurs

Wow, pair of black-winged stilts at #SeatonWetlands well out of usual range and first I’ve seen in UK
May 5, 2025 at 10:30 AM
For #FossilFridsy here’s the type specimen of ‘Othnielosaurus consors’ in the mount that used to be on display in the Peabody Museum (now in their collection’s centre). Don’t get too excited though, a lot of this is plaster and it’s rather difficult to study …

In honour of the recent paper on Nanosaurus by me and @tweetisaurus.bsky.social (may it rest in peace) here’s a little 3D model I made of the truly awful holotype specimen named by Marsh in 1877, which can be found the in the collections of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History

Not really been feeling the social media urge lately so apologies for the lack of dino news. To spread a little wholesome content here’s a turnstone I spotted at The Cobb, Lyme Regis last weekend (a lifer for me) and the lovely bluebells at Blackbury Camp #birds #Devon #Dorset

Was chuffed to spot this very relaxed water rail on my walk at #SeatonWetlands this morning

Nice to hear that our Zimbabwean dino Musankwa is now gracing its namesake up on Lake Kariba 🦕🇿🇼

Really sad to report that our friend and colleague Richard Fortey passed away this morning after a short battle with cancer. We’ll all miss his wit and wisdom. Here he is checking out a dino footprint we found while filming together on the Isle of Wight

@nhm-london.bsky.social was looking rather lovely in the late winter sun this morning

Finishing off my Zimbabwe themed posts with this model of Syntarsus on display in the NHMZ 🇿🇼🦖

Travelled out to some historic Zim dino localities today, including the type locality for Syntarsus. Still bone in the ground but v hard to excavate. Some impressive living relatives nearby too 🦕🇿🇼🦖🇿🇼🐊
