This may be the greatest Bluesky+Hawkeye post ever…

If this what “washed” entails, then put me on the rack to dry.

Are they actually a dog whistle, or are people trying to convince you they are a dog whistle in bad faith to put you in conflict with people who may truly be your allies?

I’m a bit confused. Are you saying it’s swift’s fault that you didn’t fully understand the reference she was making based on her experiences so it would be better if she did music that appealed more to your tastes basing it on artists you understand better?

Ok, but what’s enough for anybody? How much should Beyoncé say about plantation mentality in the south for it to be considered enough? Should we base Swift’s total comments on the topic on a single line from a song?

I don’t disagree, and that mentality plays a pernicious role in southern society, but there is also a powerful critique Swift makes in acknowledging that such antebellum fantasies are normally steeped in racism and to try to say we need to get away from that

😬 Have you spent time in the south? “Plantation Weddings” are a thing, by all means a weird, mostly upper class thing, but a thing.
(As a white southerner, I think it’s super cringe, but it’s a thing…)

No arguments there. But we need hold the standards the same. Say what you will about Swift and her actions, but my point is that we shouldn’t read into Swifts lyrics things aren’t necessarily there

Not being familiar with the specific context, is an effort to both reference and critique southern culture (which she grew up in) which is still holds currency in the south today 🤷🏼‍♂️

Playing historian here (*tips hat), but it seems she’s referencing some idealize antebellum “Gone with the Wind” Plantation aesthetic that is very popular in the South, but without the slavery. It’s a product of “Lost Cause” myth we as ‘America’ can’t shake, which is what it is, but….

The same is true of “eldest daughter” which is about being marginalized as a woman, particularly in our Internet/meme culture where she’s mocking people’s portrayal of her and the effectiveness of their comments
