Historian of 18C/19C women, politics, sociability and cosmopolitanism. Frequently infuriated by politics. Reposting not necessarily a statement of personal beliefs.
Happiest of birthdays to Wolf, and to
@annelouiseavery.bsky.social, who brings us tales Wolf, Old Fox and their world of quiet kindness, compassion, companionship, love and gentle magic.

Today is a very good day to join Anne's patreon.

During the long 1754 election campaign, Lady Susan Keck laughingly told her nephew that her campaigning had brought her to unusual biscuit prominence: 'I am now a woman of the utmost consequence and I am sold in Gingerbread in all the fairs.' [HMC Hamilton (suppl.), 176-7]

Happy Easter weekend to all who celebrate!
A time to talk, laugh & reminisce. Cook together, eat favourite foods & savour companionship.

If you are on your own, rest, relax, cook, read good books, watch favourite films, walk in the sun or rain.

Yes, it's still in MS. This is the page of the diary. The diarist is 12 year old Betsey Wynne. Fortunately Prof Susan Dalton (@susandalton.bsky.social) has been able to point me to a publication that answered my question.

Mary (née Bright), Marchioness of Rockingham (1735-1804). Burke told her to preserve her papers: "Your Names indeed ought to go down together; for it is no mean part you have had in the great services which that great and good man has done to his Country."

Yesterday's appalling ambush of Zelenskyy by Trump and Vance - absolutely shocking behaviour and treatment of another world leader, and yet Trump's comment said it all ... 'this is going to be great television' ...

So worried for #Ukraine, after enduring unprovoked violence fr Russia for 3 years. Ukrainians have fought fiercely, w enormous determination & intelligence. Zelenskyy an incredible advocate, speaking daily to the world. Trump must not be allowed to surrender Ukraine's sovereignty.

Autumn Equinox
A morning of soft rain & sharp showers.
A day for damply napping cats, a large pot of rich, nourishing autumnal soup on the stove, steaming mugs of tea, soft music quietly playing, and the stack of books on the coffee table on naval history
Mabon blessings all!

The arguments vs women being able to sit in parlt were numerous in the #C18th #C19th; they often rested on a belief that men wouldn't be able to resist women's sexual allure. An example from Egerton Smith, editor of the Liverpool Mercury (from c.1834), which may make Rachel Reeves smile.

Both here and Threads seem not to be plagued with the twits, racists & bots of Twitter, but it is frustrating to run multiple sites in order to keep up with those I followed previously on only one site.

As it's #Caturday, here's our little tripod, Bridie, terror of rodents & lover of cheese.

A bit of historical exploring yesterday afternoon to take a good look at the centre of nearby Bridgwater - such impressive architecture - was very sorry to see some of the lovely houses built by duke of Chandos in the early 18C on Castle Street with broken windows & boarded up.
