I think the Pan-Hispanicists are just incapable of admitting that Spanish isn't merely a single language and is capable of evolving into several languages over the next few centuries... it all starts here... their defense will call it mere allophony.. stigmatize it as product of poor education

I guess s-dropping is still adequate because the actual /s/ sound is gone. But dropping seems like "oh it just fell away", this is like "it mutated away over time leaving traces of its existence on the vowel of its syllable"

To even transcribe it as [pahto] seems misleading because it really is that the glottis is still partially open during production of the /a/ vowel, which gives it a *breathy* quality. The vowel is longer and maybe more open, and has that breathiness to it that isn't just sticking H at the end.
