I was born to an incarcerated mother. Many adoptees like me—especially those whose mothers were labeled 'juvenile delinquents'—remain unaware of their carceral birth because youth protection laws prevent disclosure.

A vast number of mothers in maternity homes did not enter willingly but were literally incarcerated by the Children’s Aid Society or youth courts. This will not be disclosed in your adoption records, as the CYFSA and YCJA prohibit such disclosure. 2/2

However, the report did not examine other ethnicities in maternity homes, nor separated, deserted, widowed, or divorced individuals (now considered unmarried parents) whose children were forcibly adopted, whether in or out of maternity homes. 3/5

The Senate report (The Shame is Ours) specifically focuses on white, unwed mothers in maternity homes — institutions where mothers went to have their babies adopted.
