Unusually beautiful breakers along the Kihei coast today, and surfers were out enjoying them. A minute of the magnificent ocean.
Peace.

I wanted to watch the tsunami at the reef where we swim. So at the last minute I learned how to capture video on a phone. This is the Ulua beach webcam in South Kihei on Maui. The first wave surge happened later than expected, after dark, so no viewing. But here, for you, is the beach at sunset.

Maui sunset report: After a day when the smell of smoke filled the air from a brushfire across the ridge, the wind has died, the birds have bedded down, and even Mr. Northern Cardinal, first to rise and last to sing, has drifted into sleep.

Peace.

Sunset report Maui: after extra strong gusts of wind all afternoon, the breeze has begun to settle down. The birds have quieted, except for one making big circles overhead, softly chipping.
Peace.

Touching joy in the morning. I get up to listen to the dawn chorus, and this Northern Cardinal couple circle around me with their warning "chink." One or both of them land on the roof each morning to check me out. Today I said a proper hello.

Good morning, Mr. Cardinal! 🌿

Touching joy first thing every morning. I step outside early, around 5:30 here, to enjoy the dawn chorus. The sky is that dark-bright blue of in-between. The worlds that can't be spoken are close, whispering, glad.

The memoir Educated grabbed me hard, resonating with authoritarianism in my story. So I explore authoritarianism in Western history, how it rests on a worldview going back to the 5th c. Here's to a different worldview—to starting with the knowing inside.

We have such adorable blue ladybeetles! She's the ash-grey ladybeetle but bluish IRL. She eats bugs that live on papayas. Tinier than my pinkie, she carries the sky and Maui's West Mountain on her back, though you might have to zoom in and imagine a bit. 🌿

Earthquake just came rolling through on Maui! This one right here on island, some miles from Hana. We sometimes feel the larger ones on the Big Island. Unusual to have one right here.

"Sovereignty of mind is exactly what those who would control others cannot tolerate. Colonialism, authoritarianism, fascism—they are all attempts to ... rub out the knowledge arising from within a person & replace it with the knowledge & authority of someone else."

Maui sunset report: Rain is coming. The mists are beginning to settle in the distance. A breeze picked up and is sweeping through the pasture grass just out of camera range, rustling the grass in waves as it passes.

Peace.

Maui sunset report: delicate shades of pink. The birds have settled into sleep. The only sounds: a lawn sprinkler, a dog barking far away, traffic in the distance.

Peace.

This photo. I enjoy it so much I’m putting it on my new website. Java sparrows here in Hawaiʻi are just this adorable. Photo by Arduinna on Pixabay.

Maui sunset report: After a few days of hazy vog and itchy eyes, the south wind has died and is no longer bringing Pele’s signals over from the Big Island. Utterly calm and still tonight. It’s nice to get our clear air back.

Peace.

Maui sunset report: Fully overcast in shades of muted gray with just the barest hint of pink. But enough for the water to pick it up.

Wishing a very Merry Christmas to those who celebrate and a peaceful day to those who don’t. Here is a recent predawn view from Maui. December 2.

It was SO good at Thanksgiving I turned right around and made another one! Purple sweet potato pie with macadamia nut crust & haupia topping.

Life is short. Eat pie first!

Haupia: a gelatin of lightly sweetened coconut milk.
