While you are shoveling snow, please help your community and Prince William County Fire & Rescue System by clearing three feet of space around hydrants and ensuring it is visible to the street. This prevents damage to hydrants, and you could save a life!

Here are steps you can take if your pipes freeze!

1. Turn on the closest cold-water faucet to relieve pressure caused frozen pipes.

2. Wrap towels soaked in warm water around pipes to thaw them out.

3. NEVER use a blow torch or hair dryer to thaw frozen pipes.

These tips will make the most out of your salt and prevent excess from entering our waterways:

-Clear snow before using any salt.
-Use a metal-edge shovel to scrape up ice.
-Shovel early before the snow turns to ice.
-12 ounces of salt is enough for 10 sidewalk squares!

Did you know water main breaks happen more often in winter?

Cold weather causes the ground to shift, putting stress on pipes. The ground shifting can lead to cracks, leaks or breaks- up to three times more frequently than in summer!

Lower temperatures can cause pipes to freeze or burst. Protect your pipes before the temperature drops!

- Report missing meter lids to us.
- Insulate pipes in unheated areas and seal air drafts.
- Ensure your family knows where the main water shutoff is

#BeSaltSmart and recognize when you should keep the salt in the shaker!

When it is less than 15°F salt won't melt ice. It's better to scrape the ice off with a metal-edge shovel. You can put down environmentally friendly sand or native bird seed for traction.
