I find that this is an expansive state of mind (or a stage of life) to be in. And I also have the strong sense that there’s something much deeper there that I’ve not yet begun to understand.

Alan Watts used to say that there's a beginning stage of not knowing what you want and there's an end stage of not knowing what you want. In the beginning stage, you don't know what you want because you haven't thought much about it.

Although it is annoying, this is probably true in most cases. Software used to be much more expensive.

In other words, taking pleasure in the activity of the pursuit itself regardless of whatever future it may lead to is the only way to do something well for a long period of time.

Mere discipline or will is not enough.
