* toxic scrubber wash discharge filled with carcinogenic PAHs that bioaccumulate, heavy metals, etc.

* underwater sound that disrupts sonar communication for whales

As the shipping industry faces mounting pressure to reduce emissions, one of the most misleading compromises has been the use of exhaust gas cleaning systems-–commonly known as scrubbers

Give Right Whales Room
North Atlantic right whales are on the move along the Atlantic coast of the U.S. If seen, remember that approaching a right whale closer than 500 yards is a violation of federal law.

We made a tip sheet to distribute in the Old Port today for people working there & interfacing with cruise passengers.

They all knew about the norovirus outbreak & had no information how to minimize their risk.

How can Portland be so thoughtless?

The Enchanted Princess in Portland today hits the trifecta:
Air pollution
Water pollution
Noise pollution

USCG claims cruise ships are “exempt” from the regulation that prohibits horns from being used as entertainment. We’re waiting to see the CFR #. If it doesn’t exist, the ship is in violation.

“…the land, the air, and the water are not ours to use without thought. They are ours to protect.

We are not owners. We are stewards. And together, we can take meaningful action.

That is why we are working with advocates to explore a ban on cruise ship scrubbers.”

There are 4 cruise ships in the Portland harbor today.

It is unconscionable to keep growing cruise tourism without any understanding of the costs & environmental harm to the community.
