I thought so too. He's from the Goldsmiths cohort immediately before Hirst and Emin.

Such an interesting perspective, Richard. Reminds me of this one by my friend Geoff Staden.

I know that feeling, Rosanna...

Just right in my book, Kieran. I really enjoyed the tone of the story.

Have you read The Wheelwright's Shop by George Sturt, Jo? Conveys how well the men who worked there knew their local trees and what quality of timber they would yield.

Thanks, Kieran, that's a generous offer, I'd be interested in your thoughts.

I guess you'd call it a novella, Kieran. It's set in 1971, so might not be of much interest generally, but I knew a lot of musicians from that time, and in its way it was quite pivotal. I'm debating whether to send it out.

Just written one myself - this looks intriguing!

Solved!

I think everything counts. Something as simple as blood sugar morning/afternoon can change how I feel about a script, and other writers have told me the same. I'd be surprised if your feelings about your work weren't influenced by your condition, Matt, especially the energy fluctuations involved.

Isn't confidence a strange phenomenon, Matt. I sometimes think I have to stand beside it and watch it as it goes up and down. Anyway, for my money, your story is of a very high calibre indeed. Our writing community clearly thinks so!

Wonderful piece of writing, Matt - I think my favourite of yours. Lovely to see it getting so many reads. Congratulations!

Will do, Rosanna, thanks very much for your interest. Some time away yet, I'd imagine.

I've just completed various stories that were left half done, and have sent out the Gwen John one. It looks like there'll be a full collection at some point, but I don't know when. I find writing of the calibre of Graham's both inspiring and daunting.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Rosanna. I've re-read it and will do so again, for pleasure and learning.
November 20, 2025 at 7:10 AM
Really, a pleasure, Kieran - I hope it reaches lots of readers.

It's the sort of piece I'd imagine you'd need to be in a particular space to write. I've done a little retreat work and can relate to that sense of impressions crowding in. You've captured it really well.
