sorry if this is dumb but better to get the dumb suggestions out of the way first :D did you try scaling it up so you can see if it does show up but at a different spot than expected? for example, the idle AST stance had the weapon floating, but the tear shows up around the hand instead.

1. Play with non-symmetrical placement
2. Lighting is everything!
3. If you stretch & clip it right, you can even make it look like it's streaming down the cheek

For me it's probably hands cause I love how much they can tell of the story. Hard but equally rewarding. The idea is, if you only had the hands to go by, could you get an idea what's going on? what everyone is feeling and how strongly they're feeling it? I think that lvled up my gposing considerably
