States can’t set fuel economy standards.

They can opt to adopt California emissions standards over Federal ones. Obviously there’s some correlation (reducing fuel consumption reduces emissions), but that’s not the same thing.

PBS aired a documentary about him (part of the American Masters series, I think) a few years ago that was fascinating. Highly recommended. They rerun it occasionally, and I presume it’s available from their streaming site as well (and maybe Amazon).

The first of Nixon’s two Supreme Court nominees to be rejected by the Senate. That hadn’t happened since Grover Cleveland, about 75 years earlier.

The third try finally succeeded when Harry Blackmun was unanimously approved.

I have a double album with them (one is probably a reissue of this one). Hilarious.

Rodale founded Prevention magazine, which is still being published (I’m pretty sure, anyway).

I think Pete Hamill was the other guest, IIRC.

Technically accurate. Just not in the way they likely intended.

His autobiography, “Harpo Speaks,” is quite good.

George Burns told Dick Cavett that Harpo was the nicest man he ever knew.

This might be the shot-on-video episode that I most wish had been filmed instead.

The book “Space Odyssey” by Michael Benson is a fascinating look at how this movie was made, for those who are into that sort of thing. I borrowed it from the library and liked it so much (and figured I’d want to reread it) that I bought myself a copy.

Having said that … yikes.

Another memory of my first viewing:

Halfway through I thought, “Gee, this doesn’t really seem like a Hitchcock movie.”

And then the reveal happened and “Oh, this is totally a Hitchcock movie!”

The first time I saw it (in college, I think), I thought it had the worst ending of any movie I had ever seen.

My views have since matured, shall we say.

But I still hesitate to recommend it to people sometimes for that reason. I end up guessing how they might take it.
