It's a great album, and a worthy successor to Heart Under. The new songs sound great live too.

Excellent, Peter messaged me earlier. It seems that at least 8 or 10 Twitter (or ex-X) folk were there last night! I took a good look around on the way out, though I didn't meet a single one!

Yes, exactly!

Hahaha. I figured that if I waited to find others to perform with (given that it's no longer the '90s and nobody advertises in the back of Melody Maker or hangs handwritten ads in music shops anymore), then I'd likely never do it at all unless I did it myself, so I chose the latter.

I totally respect that. I'm the same when it comes to guitars. I wouldn't ever program guitars (though I have programmed some bass, particularly where I want sub-bass). Nothing beats enjoying an instrument and performing it on a recording. It's the imperfections that actually make it unique.

You could still play live instruments if you choose to, but everything else can be programmed. Using DAWs such as BandLab on your mobile, it's effectively cost-free. If you go for a more professional DAW, then you're looking at spending a little initially as a one-off payment.

The creative aspect really is the best bit. The point where ideas seemingly come out of nowhere and spin off in all kinds of different directions. I love that too.

You might get a lot of value out of creating music using a DAW. .../cont'd

It really is the best thing in the world, Steve, whether you're playing music with others, or doing something by yourself. I've certainly toyed with playing with others, but I've been there done that, so I'm happy doing it alone. There's also no having to compromise too!

I'm using a DAW these days, it's a tad easier programming Ableton Live than programming a drum machine!

This was my trusty drum machine in the eighties/early-nineties. A brilliant little machine!

😉😆😆 Damn!

Do you remember when Eldritch attempted to convince the record label that he had formally "quit" The Sisters, and the only remaining "member" was Doktor Avalanche, the trusty drum machine? I might try that approach next time... 😁

You're right, it's an incredible system. Last night was immensely loud - but the clarity was excellent. My ears are very definitely still complaining this afternoon!

Me too! 😁

David McAlmont popped up recently at a Patrick Fitzgerald (Kitchens Of Distinction) gig too!

I don't know the song, but it sounds almost like it laid all the groundwork for the more spiky C86 sound laid down by Soup Dragons. I first remember hearing 'Can't Take No More' on the brilliant Channel 4 video show on a Friday called 'The Chart Show'.

Yeah, it was up and down for a while, wasn't it? I wasn't sure if there was a short somewhere, but amongst all of that kit, I wouldn't know where to start looking, other than turning one thing off at a time until they find the eventual source of the problem. I'm glad that they did though!

The Loft rings a bell. I don't have any of their stuff, but remember seeing their 12" in a great little record shop when I was in my teens.
November 25, 2025 at 2:09 PM
Hahaha I love them to bits, but after the first time and the second time, it becomes a case of "when" and not "if" they move to pastures new.

The drummer left one band and we didn't even bother recruiting a new one, we replaced him with a drum machine! 😄

The sound was excellent. I'd love to understand what happened with the power outage at Shields' amps.

It's so strange, Andrea. At least half a dozen people who I know were there, it's now transpired, yet I saw nobody last night!

I was fairly close to the front, maybe 20 rows back, having arrived just before the support came on.

What a venue! I've not been there before, it's huge!

I've worked with several drummers and there's one constant across all of them - 'grass is greener' syndrome, i.e. if they get a sniff of a record deal elsewhere, then they're off. Away from that, nothing beats a live drummer. Having said that, I love the flexibility of programming drums in a DAW.

That's why labels like Creation, 4AD, Sarah, Lazy etc were so important at that time - the majors either just weren't interested or didn't know how to develop these acts. The smaller labels allowed bands more creativity and control.
November 25, 2025 at 1:51 PM
Yeah, the compilation 'Doing It For The Kids' comes to mind. It felt a little like Creation's equivalent of 4AD's 'Lonely Is An Eyesore'. Both compilations were hugely influential in me parting with all my money from the mid-eighties onwards 😆
November 25, 2025 at 1:47 PM
Yes, absolutely. Once HOL, Ride and MBV were on-board, they were flying high. I bet McGee kicked himself for allowing HOL to leave - and I'm pretty sure that on reflection, HOL felt that Fontana wasn't exactly the best home for their music.

I'm not sure what year Creation was formed, but it had almost certainly been around for a few years, because there were quite a number of early releases from memory that didn't do much commercially, but they started to carve a name for themselves in indie circles.
