Public health scientist at Sciensano (BEL). Microbiologist with interest in bacterial disease, AMR, genetics, plasmids and phages.
Back in 2014, we started a research project to develop an ultra-fast #antibiotic susceptibility test for #tuberculosis, based on quantification of RNA biomarkers. At @sciensano.be , we designed, optimized and validated this revolutionary assay over the next decade, and published it in eBioMedicine!
Speeding up drug susceptibility testing in Mycobacterium tuberculosis using RNA biomarkers
Efficient management of drug-resistant tuberculosis relies on fast diagnostics. To accelerate phenotypic drug susceptibility testing [pDST] for Mycoba…

We have been tracking >1,000 non-invasive #Pneumococcal infections since 2020 in #Belgium. We show that (1) #vaccines only protect against 25% strains causing respiratory infections, (2) strong serotype diversity between invasive and non-invasive strains, and (3) higher #AMR in non-invasive strains.
Non-invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae infections are associated with different serotypes than invasive infections, Belgium, 2020 to 2023
Background Despite widely implemented pneumococcal vaccination programmes, Streptococcus pneumoniae remains a global risk for human health. Streptococcus pneumoniae can cause invasive (IPD) or non-inv...
