I haven’t read the books so I can’t offer an opinion on that, but my take is that any deficient in his performance here is overshooting Shane’s characterization and not lack of acting skills so I guess I believe he can course correct for whatever is needed for the 2nd season. (Which MUST be coming)

Fair enough and good comparison. I think part of Shane’s characterization in particular is that he has literally been raised to be an exemplar for his race and he’s not even really himself when he’s “himself” out in public. Beyond being closeted, he doesn’t know how to exist as an individual period

I read your review as concluding Williams is doing a good (adequate) job of covering Shane’s inability to break out of his repression but that if Shane, the character, didn’t break soon the show wouldn’t be successful. Is that fair?

You don't have to justify yourself to me, but I'm seeing this take everywhere & I'm curious if you have a specific example. I think Williams is playing Shane's essentially robotic nature well. He's being outacted by Storrie, but I don't think he's doing a particularly horrible job.
