Not sure if you saw / already know, but 'costume' is apparently the pronunciation of the Ukraine word 'kostium' - which means suit. He wasn't using 'costume' to mock.

Not mocking at all - I'd need a weeks notice to get proper access to my meter.

That was my worry with this - you really can't tell that people aren't actually saluting, and making it a regular thing you see in the street strikes me as a bad idea.

I remember someone getting shirty with me when they said they were coming in to read my meter and I refused - I don't think I'll be allowing unexpected strangers into my house thanks.

Oh, I hadn't spotted the numerical significance - very nice! I don't have another 32 to hand I'm afraid. I'll have to have a think - what a terrible afternoon we've set ourselves...

Isn't every era an inter-war era?

That genuinely feels incredibly optimistic. Surely at least some investors will think the random carnage is enough to threaten their investments - and once one brick falls, so the rest often follow, and quickly.

I was listening to a podcast segment from the end 2023, and they were actively looking for major, long term good and bad news. They were surprised to find they'd reported on *all* of the bad news, and *none* of the good news

I mean, I obviously didn't present that song by it's *album* name during the funeral. What sort of monster would that make me?

Allowing every team to be at least competitive in 2 games is a boost for teams from smaller leagues, in the same way that the Nations League is for smaller nations.

Obviously, channel crossings being anywhere near the main issue for anyone outside RNLI volunteers is pretty wild.
January 22, 2025 at 4:37 PM
They're different categories of issue I think. Brexit makes us a bit worse off in lots of different secondary ways that you might not really notice, setting the scene for the immediate, obvious impacts of eg NHS and cost of living.

It's true of generations of Lancashire folk too.
January 22, 2025 at 4:30 PM
Me too, but it doesn't quite work as well for this purpose - a bit too much 'monsters on all sides, and moral ambiguity in picking sides'.

The interview on @kermodeandmayo.bsky.social was very good - for some reason until then I'd thought of Eisenberg mostly as the terrible Lex Luther and the fun Zombie land movies, but he's clearly much more than that. Worth a listen.

You probably know - that character was based heavily on a real person, a Rawandan refugee who Eisenberg cites as his most devoute Jewish friend.
