The boxes from left to right respectively are:
Nitro - you die as you touch them
Aku Crate - you gain an "HP", having 3 Aku masks makes you invincible. Note: You can already enter the level with 2 at this point in the game!
TNT - you take damage (= losing Aku mask or dying if you don't have any)

But in reality, it's more effective than sluggish, additional UI text. No need for reading (= no localization/language issues), you visually understand the intention of each element!

The developers intentionally designed the early stages of the game so that the ENVIRONMENT conveys the game rules and the player gets familiar with it by any means. No fancy tutorial text ANYWHERE. When was the last time you saw such #gamedesign? It's becoming more and more rare in new games...

Oh, interesting! Is your game focused on fighting too then?
My game is inspired by Crash of the Titans, so the majority of the gameplay happens while saddling creatures, but I want to focus on platforming challenges both on and off said entities and make combat on your own enjoyable, as well.
