First AVATAR was a great movie but only average sci-fi. After that, any sane person might have turned the sequels into an animated TV series.

As usual...
My top 10 maritime movies...
1. WaterWorld - easy choice
2. Red Cliff 1 & 2 - sea battle
3. Life Of Pi
4. Triangle
5. Deep Blue Sea - better than Jaws
6. Poseidon (remake)
7. Dead Calm
8. The African Queen
9. Cutthroat Island - fun with pirates
10. The Bedford Incident (token b&w)

Because SF is more rational than passionate. STALKER succeeds when embracing its fairy-tale aspects, often at the expense of any SFnal content.

I'm not a big fan of Tarkovsky... but I think it'd be fairly easy to explain, if not prove, that SOLARIS was far better SF than STALKER, no matter what the creators intended.

Big problem with SF lists is that most older stuff eventually, if not inevitably, becomes irrelevant, except as allegory. For me, 'passionate' views beat any attempted objectivity, every time.

Good answer, but I'd prefer 'best-of' lists to pick 'excellence' over merely 'good'. Any 'balance' for the sake of variety just looks daft.

'Someone' might have had a good point about Tarkovsky.
I've always thought any top 10 or 20 *must* include all the writer's favourites. Otherwise, what's the point of having opinions?

Well, Houston's AFRICAN QUEEN is much better than half the list.

He's really good in Marvel TV show Moon Knight, finding just the right balance of humour and madness.

It might be funny if AI writers & directors insist on documentary (single-take?) realism. 😉

But with old John Milius directing... or second choice - Marcus Nispel?
