Homelab update! Nutanix wasn’t it. Didn’t like my hardware. So I’m running @proxmox.bsky.social And in this screenshot, I’m in a hotel on an iPad Pro using @tailscale.com to get to my lab, and installing Windows Server 2022 for AD/ DNS/ DHCP for the lab. It’s surreal how seamless Tailscale works.

I cannot begin to describe to you how much it hurts my soul to install Windows anywhere in my lab, but it will be good experience I suppose. I’ve never heard of a corporation using Red Hat IdM for its main authentication management. Anyway, it will be fun!

The upper half on the left however is sitting on top of a half inch mess of supports because I failed to ensure it was sitting on the axis before I printed it. That’s going to be fun to clean up. Luckily it’s getting stuffed into the back of the printer enclosure so niceness isn’t a factor.

Homelab day 3: it’s alive! The SFP model arrives so I was able to connect the lab switch to the router and configure that. Next frustration was that there’s apparently no way to write the Nutanix ISO to a USB drive successfully in macOS. Using dd don’t work. balenaEtcher. UNetBootIn didn’t work.
Dashboard of my new three node Nutanix CE cluster. I know what a handful of these things are but it’s mostly foreign after a career in VMWare. There are some errors and warnings that I’ll dive into tomorrow.

Homelab adventures day 2: I thought I had a workaround when I found a Mikrotik Hex S router with an SFP port in one of my drawers. I used one of the DAC cables I have for the servers, but that didn’t play well with the Trendnet 10g switch. I was hoping they would auto-negotiate to 1g.

My chopsticks delivered with dinner, both from one sealed single use pack, are different sizes.

Sisters, not twins. I think that’s how that works?
Two wooden chopsticks from one single use to go package sitting on the arm of a couch. One chopstick is about twenty percent smaller than the other. Ignore the bit of napkin in the upper right corner I didn’t notice until I was posting this and couldn’t crop out.

Do you ever make a mistake so monumentally dumb you question your whole profession?

I returned a Logitech mouse because the scroll wheel was broken. The replacement was also broken, so I messaged support.

Turns out there’s a button RIGHT THERE that switches from free spin to ratcheting. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Can we get a workspace 🧵 going? I’d love to know that I’m not the only one working in chaos. (I ran out of room in the alt text! Didn’t get to mention my plants!😭)
Messy workspace. General layout is a wall with shelves to the left, a desk against a sliding glass door straight ahead, and another desk to the right making an L with both desks. There is a Secret Lab chair facing the desk on the right. The desk on the right has, from right to left, a Wi-Fi pineapple Mark VII, a Fallout mousepad with a wireless Logitech mouse, a tech-inspired Mickey Mouse coffee cup with cooling down coffee, an open Cherry Bubly sparkling water, a computer monitor (the second one, along with two Mac Minis and a KVM switch is out of frame to the right), a speaker bar, various nick-nacks like Rubik’s cubes and a mini rainbow WALL•E Funko and a mini pride BB-8, ADHD meds, an open pizza box with half of a meat-lovers pizza, my 40% Planck EZ keyboard I’m in love with, and a foot massager under the desk. Between the two desks is a tower of drawers with a bunch flog different cables and adapters in the drawers; and then random cables and books I sorted on top.
