also given that diseases like covid (or measles!) are airborne and can spread through mere breathing, segregating by "sick" or "well" sides doesn't do a ton :/

Given that a significant percentage of infectious covid cases are asymptomatic, a more effective policy is to just require (or at least strongly recommend) masking! You can't really know who's sick and who isn't by symptoms or self reports alone. health.clevelandclinic.org/asymptomatic...
