NYC has one to commemorate the inauguration of George Washington. It was meant to echo the Roman Republic. So I'm not all that sure about the sole association.

It's cute how socialists of all stripes love invoking the "Working Families" mantra.

@cmthomasphl.bsky.social, you and your colleagues are free to run for Congress. You must simply resign.

Woah. Brave words:

This is the ratchet effect I'm most concerned about.

I think this refers to Philadelphia Code § 9-1132, which prohibits retailers from charging more to cash users. That would prohibit a retailer from rounding up. Rounding down would be pretty inconvenient as it would require a ton of nickels on hand.

FYI, the domestic worker laws treat all people who hire cleaners or babysitters -- not "business interests" -- as employers. And no one is following those laws because they're impossible to comply with. And they exacerbate immigration status problems.

Who says Philly can't be libertarian?

I call this "This beach has been reserved. Philadelphia, PA."

The City/Mayor has started a youtube show where Chief Administrative Officer Camille Duchaussee "has coffee" with city officials. No coffee is drunk, but a cup is present. Why? I can only assume the Mayor wants people to appreciate how the city employs people. For what? Who cares.

A question: does Philly have more or less state capacity for the 2026 Semiquincentennial than it had for the notorious 1926 Sesqui-Centennial that crippled Philly?
June 10, 2025 at 1:51 PM
To contribute to the Abundance v. Labor debate, of course Labor is a problem. Here's Councilmember Jim Harrity, a sock for Labor, with one of the many bills that kill state capacity.

Lol. The developer isn't asking to implement a quid pro quo.

It looks like the Mayor has a profoundly wrong view of zoning. It is fundamentally based on the police power-that the gov't can regulate land use to prevent negative externalities that would be nuisances ahead of when they would occur.

In case you weren't aware, the Reparations Task Force was hired explicitly by race. As City Council stated in its announcement, "[t]his reparations task force is a vehicle to implement the vision of Black Philadelphians for Black Philadelphians." phlcouncil.com/reparations-...

I refuse to find anything nefarious in more people who want to live in the city and residents consensually selling to them and developers to make some money. As the underlying paper admits, to the extent residents are being "pushed out," that is because our government refuses to allow new housing.
May 14, 2025 at 8:42 PM
Note that whatever one's view of this endeavor to identify "gentrification," the major cause is not building enough housing. That fault is not on the "gentrifiers" in Philly. It's on City Council.
