I have just figured out that it's going to keep going all day. Will have to revisit this post tomorrow morning...

All good! It's just that you get quite a few folks treating this place like twitter, and it doesn't do a lot of the other shit that twitter does (like penalizing links, for example)

No idea about social media elsewhere, but you can post what you like here as long as you label it appropriately. There's plenty of folks posting full-on porn, and they seem to be OK

I think there's also an underlying assumption that he's a one-off, he'll die soon, and then there won't be a problem any more.

Which is horribly short-sighted: the first bit may be true, but by then what he does will have been normalized and so the next asshole will do it too.

Sounds horrible. You have my sympathies.

Which only leaves the problems of scale and intent and ownership as being insoluble...

I think more specific feeds for the industry would be helpful. OurSky is great, but it's too broad if you're a client looking for a new friend in a particular city.

How do they know it's benign? NCII is determined by who shares it and why, not the content of the image. There's no way a moderator can know that.

Also, human moderators can't come anywhere close to handling the required workload, so almost all moderation is completely automated.

The hashing would have to be done on the host device, since StopNCII claim they never get the original image.

Where did you get 3-5 days from? I see no reason it should take even 3-5 seconds to generate a hash from an image.

A thought experiment: how hard would it be to write an app that scraped the Bluesky firehose, and reported all images to StopNCII? Suddenly all images on Bluesky are blocked.

StopNCII might have systems to prevent mass-reports, but given how well thought out this seems to be, I wouldn't bet on it.

Let me give you a very concrete example of how this could and probably will be abused:

Literally anyone could submit this non-intimate, publicly available photo to StopNCII, all you would get is a hash, and you’d block anyone from posting it.

I’m honestly surprised it hasn’t already happened.

It'd be very easy to build feeds off hashtags like those. I wonder if the existence of feeds like that might encourage people to use them more...
