Who was Smith thinking of? Perhaps persons like Benedict Arnold who, from 1760-1775, operated as a merchant-trader, sending ships to the West Indies, Canada, & Europe. He became prosperous in these years, but often was overextended and in debt. Greedy, insecure, self-centered and bitter.
