Melting permafrost, releasing vast quantities of methane, shrinking ice sheets, allowing the absorption of more solar radiation, and the decline of the Amazon as a carbon sink could all push temperatures beyond what humans can manage.

We cannot rely on future innovations to eliminate that risk.
