When I lived in Indianapolis, I grew fond of breaded fried pork tenderloin sandwiches. The pork tenderloin is usually pounded flat, so it sticks out from the bun in all directions. I liked them with hamburger toppings — lettuce, tomato, mayo and a red onion slice.

It's based on two short stories by Jean Shepherd that were fictional accounts of himself growing up in Indiana during the Depression, so it has to be in the 1930s or pre-war 1940s. The Wikipedia entry on it says it's based in 1940.
