This is indeed a very technical paper (I am coauthor) - and the e-book is very complete but also very technical. A much less technical highly introductory text , geared towards social scientists and with an emphasis on using e-methods for meta analysis is Ly et al., osf.io/preprints/ps... , psyarxiv
