When Trump threatened to fire Jay Powell in his first term, the Fed chief was told it would be illegal but he would have to personally contest it in court. Privately, Powell vowed that he would "spend my last nickel fighting" it, as @sbg1.bsky.social and I reported in "The Divider."

Other presidents have been frustrated by court rulings they didn't like but recognized the importance of abiding by decisions. When the Supreme Court ruled against Bush 43 in a war-on-terror case, he was urged to overrule the justices but refused, as reported in "Days of Fire."
