This is welcome news for EV transition, but the ratio of EVs to chargers is a key metric for prospective owners. In the UK, the number of EV is also increasing fast (in 2025, roughly +450,000 which is +33% YoY), so I made to chart to show ratio over time. www.transportxtra.com/publications...

Nice spot. I long for the day our journey planners are tweaked to sustainable defaults and customisable by the user.
Two extra interesting points (1) the walk default also boosted to cycling (2) the health and norms messaging didn't budge driving choice when driving was the default.

The report invites some sub-regional questions, given the data show a weak correlation*, so they've really got to investigate within different geographic and demographic contexts [regression shows regional-level chargepoint density explains 3.61% of the variance from the variable EV:ICE adoption]

Promising to see Transport For Humans included in today's announcement for a national integrated transport strategy from DfT SoS Louise Haigh MP. In about 6-9 months time we'll see what big and small actions burst forth. Call for ideas is 👌

Promising to hear the wider case for walking and cycling investment being made by @LouHaigh https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/aug/20/labour-investment-cycling-walking-unprecedented-louise-haigh and for behavioural sciences to support road safety initiatives too....

Reform --> (work in progress/draft) would scrap all parts of HS2, ban all clean air zones and LTN schemes, scrap ZEV mandate for manufacturers and ICE phase out date. Would 'focus on the North'. Estimate £1bn/yr savings
November 14, 2024 at 6:45 AM
Green --> big spenders with £19bn for public transport and £10bn/yr subsidies, full rail nationalisation, fuel duty escalator, ICE phase out 2027, 20mph default in built-up areas, £2.5bn active travel, frequent flyer levy (note GP website is faulty, so look at PDF)
November 14, 2024 at 6:33 AM
Liberal Democrat --> lots new here; rail fare freeze, plugin-car grant, VAT 5% on public charging, young persons buscard, frequent flyer levy, private jet tax, banning super short domestic flights and quite a bit more.
November 14, 2024 at 6:23 AM
Conservative --> transport spans multiple chapters; firstly in economy for rail and major roads, then communities for buses and streets, then specific schemes for Wales & Scotland. Lots on specific schemes and lots on driving, roads and streets
November 14, 2024 at 6:13 AM
Labour --> short and sweet, not much new here as it builds April announcements for bus and rail, certifies ICE phase out 2030, adds ~£65m/yr for potholes by scrapping deferring A27 bypass scheme. Bullet point summary my own.

I published an article in Local Transport Today about the language used in travel behavior change.
'Carrots and sticks' has strengths, but also many weaknesses. Time to fill the gaps with alternatives. Free to read here - (just make a free account) https://tapas.network/44/dyson.php

Delighted to be appointed Bicycle Mayor Of Bath. An independent position coordinated by @BYCS_org across 120 cities. I'll be taking over the reins (/bars?) from @SaskiaHeijltjes.
Representing cycling in all its forms. Lots to do. Ideas for Bath welcome.

The warmth and concision of this Irish Ferries radio advert is something to behold. Very much transport for humans. From experience, that Holyhead-Dublin ferry is a real melting pot of cultures, crying out for a TV documentary.

Could do better with cycle parking, @FullyChargedShw at @Farnborough_Int conference centre. Left dreaming of a covered area with proper bike racks. It can be done.

I wondered how to keep Transport For Humans moving along - reach more people around the world and collect presentations, articles and thoughts from @rorysutherland and I in one place. One answer is this new website: <a href="http://www.transportforhumans.com" class="hover:underline text-blue-600 dark:text-sky-400 no-card-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-link="bsky">http://www.transportforhumans.com
Enjoy!

Okay, found it in full report. Disappointingly modest contribution from transport (only ~20% cut by 2035). Very low estimate of EV uptake (bet they go way faster than forecast). More hope with updating vehicle emissions regulations.
November 14, 2024 at 6:13 AM
US climate bill makes big claims. Two sources analyse the expected emissions impact, but neither shows a breakdown of relative contribution of various bill sections (EVs/homes/energy). Left wondering, do we just trust, clap and hope? 👏🤷

Brilliant trip to Broadcasting House with @rorysutherland for BBC Radio 4. 'Transport For Humans' will be 30min episode of 'The Spark', a wonderful series by @helenlewis. Out in October, so still time for some summer reading ;) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1913019357/

Back in summer 1926, the London Underground was advertised as place to *escape* the heat. Since then, friction from trains has gradually warmed the tunnels. Some solutions to diminish and harness that heat......

How might this happen? In September I’m starting a 4yr PhD at University of Bath. Leaving the East End likely means bigger swim groups, new rides+runs (hills!) and more training partners and opportunities. Grateful for support, comradery and some luck. Take in my stride. 😀

Looking to 2023, what are plausible ways to come Top 10? Route 1 – improve swim >3mins, then bike better with faster people, then run similar. Route 2 – swim the same, hope bike plays out well again, improve run by 3-5mins over marathon. Will be trying Route 1 first.

Total training is ~20hrs/week, inc two squad swimming sessions. A typical training week = high-intensity on Tuesday-Friday, longer sessions Saturday+Sunday. I usually chill on Monday.

In sport, I’m accountable only to myself; self-coached and researching my own equipment. No commitments to sponsors or a team, freedom to pick the fastest stuff. Mostly off eBay, cos top gear is £££ or soldout, built my aerobars from copper piping though.

Made the third swim pack, but frustrated not to bridge to the group +3.5mins ahead. Fortunately, our bike group worked well mopping up many ahead (so🤷‍♂️). For the marathon run, 11 of us were fighting for 9th place. I was in the mix, it was a great tussle.

What's it take? World-class, continental and domestic Pros battle it out. In 2019 I was close to the Top 10 and this year I improved by several minutes and places. It was a tighter, hotter and deeper field. Notice how athletes get clustered into groups.
