Ah yes, the standard STRK, SYST, ALARK, MAINT, PWR, and 9 ports of the Cisco Catalyst 9850. This is really helpful to have port aggregation groups with a size of 1 (completely missing the point of link aggregation) to demonstrate the clear difference between LACP and PAgp. Useful. Love this!

God I hate LinkedIn so much. I avoided it for a decade but circumstances are what they are and I've recently had to make one. My feed is riddled with AI slop like this described as "real world diagrams" with hundreds of likes and sycophantic "Love this" comments. What a useless site.

The SNR (Signal to Noise) ratio is a comparison between how much signal power and how much noise there is. In this example, there is -42 dBm of signal, and -88 dBm of noise. That's a relative difference of 46 dB between them. (In other words, the signal level is 40000 times greater than the noise)

In terms of relative change if we see a value of -42 dBm that changes to -45 dBm, that is a 3 dB change, which means we just saw the power cut in half. That's the relative change.

That sounds drastic, but in wireless these kinds of fluctuations are common.

But what is -42 dBm in terms of power?

Hate math? Great news, I got your back. There's a trick! A decibel value shows a relative change. It's simply a comparison! For dBm, it's a comparison to 1 mW. With power, there is what is known as the 10's and 3's rule:

+10 dB = power x 10
-10 dB = power / 10
+3 dB = power x 2
-3 dB = power / 2

If you've ever looked at Wi-Fi traffic you've likely seen RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) values with numbers such as -63 dBm. Even a lot of professionals without a wireless background are often times lost conceptually at just what this number means, or the relative scale of these figures.

Yes, yes, it's from the bad place, but for the love of god can my party please stop turning to the absolute worst, most chronically wrong people to cast them as the heroes of the resistance? Can we stop trying to win the imaginary center?

Also worth noting that very little of the Fentanyl going into the US comes over the Canadian border.

AI began to find the problem after the 11th response while giving it all of the command outputs and diagnostics it asked for.

They could spend hours chasing contradictory AI ghosts, or they could learn how 802.1q works and isolate it in a minute. 🤷‍♂️

AI is a tool, not a replacement for expertise.

I handed the full configuration of the router and switch to ChatGPT, told it the topology, and told it to troubleshoot why the PCs aren't getting an address. Pages of troubleshooting later (focused on RAs), the first mention of a trunk was to *make sure there was none*. The Gig0/1 should be a trunk.

I get asked by students a lot why they need to learn anything because they can just use AI (seriously...this is a regular question/comment I get in earnest). I'll be continuing to try and convince students via example as I always do.

Part of their work will be with this network tomorrow.

In tomorrow's lesson around VLANs for a networking course I'm teaching:

This Cisco proprietary protocol can be devastating if you're careless and/or implement poor controls. I'll just connect this used switch from E-bay to that switch and...oh no my LAN!

Any guesses what happened here?

A friend last night asked me if I would ever use hotel Wi-Fi for my personal use (open network with a captive portal) and was surprised when I said *yes*.

I view security as being about mitigation, not elimination. The risks are different today compared to a decade ago, and in a positive way. 1/4

If the tool isn't working, you can look at the frequency content! DTMF comprises of 2 tones per signal. Using a tool like audacity we can see the frequency content for the digit. The 2 spikes for this one are closest to 941 Hz and 1336 Hz: 0

I'm currently teaching a course on network fundamentals and just walked learners through the basics of packet analysis with Wireshark. Any newly connected net eng and/or infosec people have any fun pcaps of interest? Nothing particular I'm looking for, variety is the spice of life!

Same vibes. This is not a "Dems need to message better" or "Dems need to move more to the center" kind of problem to solve.
