I confess to having done this myself as an editor, esp when I get a manuscript that's devoid of any cites to the journal or even sociology.
Not for the impact factor, but because publishing is taking part in a conversation.

If you don't know who the editor is, it's probably not a journal you should want to publish in.

What do you mean impossible? Editors have a name and an academic profile. What stops you from emailing them?
