The history of the saying is totally different than the one I was taught (a million years ago).
Supposedly, the history is that the tinkers used dams to fix holes in old metal pots. Therefore, whatever is being referred to is really not much of anything.

Anyway, this comes from the Irish use of the word tinker, which is no longer in use as it's considered to be slanderous to the travelers of Ireland.
