Gardener, musician, songwriter. Over 4000 days of forestry fieldwork -- mostly eco classification -- but also just enjoying the boreal forest succession of bloom. "As Canadian as possible, under the circumstances."
A few more plants that need a good spot in the garden. Replacing a Hibiscus killed by -30C cold snap, Coreopsis, Heliopsis, Agastache. Elsewhere and growing well, Geranium 'Rozanne' blooms forever. Limelight hydrangea. Oenothera missouriensis keeps pumping out the flowers.

Mutant semi-double Hollyhock when you ordered single-flower seeds. Gaillardia. State of Phlox. (You've been here before. Pink and white created a lavender hybrid.) Hydrangea. Not to be confused with the much shorter H. serrata or Lowdrangea.

Japanese Anemone, Dalmation Foxglove, Rudbeckia hirta, and R. fulgida. Garden getting hammered by sun and heat but still plenty of flowers. R. hirta was in full bloom a month ago. Now some flowers are fading. R. fulgida just coming into bloom and we have 3 large patches.

There are some #nativeplants that are just...extraordinary. Like...you really think you needed to do THIS to attract a bee? Or did you just know how much you would please me someday and that I would become transfixed and spread you all over my garden? 🌱🌿

Lilium 'Dizzy', orange Asclepias tuberosa (milkweed) vs yellow, and A. incarnata. Swallowtail butterflies but no Monarchs. Lots of native milkweed down by the lake but we're way up in the hills in Ponderosa forest. Maybe if I add some Showy milkweed next year.

No, the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence. As well, there are no flowers. Just a wall of bark mulch and a trench/air gap to intercept Aspen clones and kill 'em soon as they sprout and have leaves. Photo from neighbors' (who planted three Aspens under the power lines) laneway.

Robin nesting on a turf rake. Hydrangea paniculata. Sanguisorba obtusa. (Next year, I'll use a tomato cage instead of bamboo.) Room with a view and Yucca filamentosa.

Delphiniums and geraniums cut back to ground level for increased airflow and second wave of flowers late summer. Already about 1 ft tall. And the Mother of All Rhubarb is starting over. One geranium was about 4 ft wide x 3 feet tall. We've had some huge flowers this year.

Just finished rejuvenating this bed. Added Oenothera missouriensis (yellow -- Missouri Evening Primrose) and Geranium 'Rozanne'. Also Buddleia, Siberian Iris, Veronica, Astilbe, Caryopteris, Salvia, Hydrangeas, Aster. Shade and full sun. Gardening under Ponderosa Pines.

First hollyhocks -- Alcea rosea--Indian Spring mixed colors. And fornicating hollyhock weevils. If not caught and squished between thumb and finger, the female bores into the seed pod and lays her eggs. I cut off each seed pod when its done flowering. No more weevils.

Delphiniums from twilight (with flash) to morning.

"Delphinium elatum 'New Millennium' refers to a series of delphinium cultivars known for their strong, tall flower spikes, vibrant colors, and improved disease resistance."

Glorious.

My mom's wish was that we spread her ashes in our garden so she could "come back as flowers." Great-grandson Jasper placed a bouquet. Compost and ashes layer cake to spread next year. Don Juan rose. Swallowtail in Delphiniums. My favorite grow through plant supports.

Trollius chinensis (globeflower) with Papaver nudicaule (Iceland poppy). The Trollius color is a lot like Cheetos but works well behind mixed poppies including orange, white, and yellow. Big show from Clematis jackmanii. Climbing into an Amelachier alnifolia (Saskatoon).

New Zealand 'Millennial' Delphiniums coming into bloom. Not as mildew prone as 'Pacific Giants'.

Baptisia australis (false indigo) took 3 years to bloom in a good spot. Still enjoying the Peonies. And Pinks. Today I staked a bunch of Delphiniums about to bloom. 18 plants. Half are in my trial friction fit bamboo fence effort. 36C today. AC at 25.5C just right.

Peak Allium giganteum with microjet rainbow. After replanting last year, Alliums back to full size -- 4' tall with 4-5 inch flowers. Instead of dozens of stakes, friction fit bamboo fence for Delphiniums. Clematis 'Blue Ravine' from UBC Botanical Garden. Happy here.

Hunting spittlebugs and hollyhock weevils. Otherwise, a very lush garden with tall plants thanks to soil amendments. 4' Oriental poppies and 2' Icelandics, for example. 3' Siberian irises. As well, spring rains in southern BC were 150% of the old normal. Not tinder dry.

Rain! Seed sowing day. Papaver somniferum (purple Hungarian), P. giganteum (pink/pale purple with seedheads as "big as baseballs." Eschscholzia californica (California poppy). And 36 Japanese Taiyo sunflowers. On top of about 120 new plants so far. Last order due soon.

On the blog this week at chickadeegardens.com we look at the shade garden, my dry shade garden and what is thriving. It's taken many years for this garden to feel lush with this much dry under trees, and here we are. 🌱

Too busy to take many photos lately. Kerria japonica (Japanese Rose or Jew's Mallow, evidently), Lamprocapnos spectabilis (Liberals-and-proud-of-it bleeding-hearts), and Papaver nudicaule (Iceland poppy). A favorite--early flower but blooms until winter with deadheading.

Usually take our bird feeders down when we see the first bear in the neighborhood. A large bear destroyed them all early this morning. Meant jumping up to pull down feeders 10-11 ft up in the air on a length of clothesline. Still have two hummingbird feeders up on our deck.

That's love. Cut a path through the raspberry patch for my wife. Last summer, went out on the deck, looked down, and J was picking berries this side of the patch. 10 feet away on other side was a rather large black bear. Oblivious to each other. J retreated. Hurled a water jug at bear.

Hello, yellow! First flower on our Kerria japonica. And first Papaver nudicaule (Iceland poppy) in the beds I'm top dressing. Glad that's done two cubic yards later. Getting our microject irrigation zones going at last.
