I remember Crick and Garcia-Bellido having an animated conversation at Caltech, during Linus Pauling’s 90th anniversary meeting. The embrace when they saw each other in the room told me there was a deep connection between these two people.

Personally, I will remember him as an exceptional mind and a kind person. He spent a year in Eric Davidson’s lab, where he often organized lively weekend barbecues at home. My wife and I were fortunate to share a wonderful Christmas dinner with his family at Edward Lewis’s house. Fond memories…

I still remember one of those — an interesting mix of scientists and wealthy locals. I recall some of the attendees: David Page, MIT and @juliusbrennecke.bsky.social (fun conversations on the lawn, over cocktails 🥂). It was a great idea — I couldn’t imagine a rich Spaniard doing something like that!
