Not a million miles away from my thoughts on it, although I was a lot more frustrated with the showing seams and missed potential.

Does read wonderfully though. Prose was great.

From the writing perspective... tougher. I find a lot of writers beat readers over the head with their themes to ensure they're understood, which I dislike... but I know full well how easy it is to be misunderstood.

Finding that sweet spot in between is hard.

Reviewer hat on, rhino skin answer is they should have been clearer.

Writer hat, rhino skin answer is it's inevitable and the trick is to focus on the people who do get it.

I don't have rhino skin, so as a reviewer I try to be generous and questioning. If my experience doesn't get it, I say why.

Wotcha Womble. Hoping to finish Dan Jones' The Green Man, a medieval mystery in the North of England. Then maybe start the last of Jemisin's Kingdoms trilogy, or pick up one of the many many books I've started and not finished.

Wotcha Womble. I'll finish Flann O'Brien's At Swim-Two-Birds, then start Jemisin's The Kingdom of Gods for a buddy read, then probably add a reread of guaranteed enjoyment for good measure as my recent run of books has not sparked joy.

Gotcha. Agreed it mostly flips things there, although Shoka (oops, got his name wrong) does have an inner vulnerability - he has all the physical power, but his emotional dependence on Taizu (partly her as a person, partly her as a symbol of his beliefs) means he does what she wants most of the time
