most people don't know or care about policy at all and just know of trump as the wall guy and harris as "sex changes for illegals" from those ads

the answer is basically immigration. the dems adopted the republican framing of the issue and brought it up as one of the foremost issues this election (huge blunder) but voters still trust trump to be "tougher". not making any compromises has also helped him ("she's running on my old platform")
