I suspect the answer is that you are vastly underestimating your capabilities and at least somewhat overestimating those of others.

the rapid shot-in-the-dark suggestions are "helpful" if (a) you don't know what exactly you're shooting at and/or (b) you aren't very quick at shooting by yourself.

as someone from Utah, I can tell you BYU-H has a very different reputation from the other two. I'm surprised the data show the skew as being *that* far, but I'm not surprised it's significantly different from the other two.

if I recall correctly, he recently pitched an actual Squid Games-esque competition show to pit poor people against each other for the chance to win money, so more or less he's the distillation of exploitative capitalist influencer culture

his main thing these days is exploiting people less fortunate than himself to generate "content", like he'll set up a chocolate box at a store and the first person who picks one up wins $1k or whatever, but he'll end up making more from the ad revenue and related merchandizing

he's such a plague on society. hate that guy.

yeah that's generally been my experience, or else things like this are sometimes linked in the text of a paragraph midway through yet another email including important things like "new AI art initiative" and "why grad students should be grateful" or whatever other nonsense they highlight
March 19, 2025 at 8:21 PM
well... are you subscribed to the school's newsletters, and do you read them? I find a lot of people — especially grad students — skip a lot of the notices that are put out through those means. (myself included, more often than not.)

thanks, I hate it

fortunately my second attempt featured the question "true or false: marijuana impairs your ability to drive?", so things went a bit better

when I took the written exam for my license the first time I got all the questions asking how many feet I could park from:

- a fire hydrant
- a stop sign
- a railroad crossing
- the corner of an intersection

these are all different answers and nobody told me it was open-note, so I failed 🙃

I like the phrasing of "whatever we gain from Greenland" — it's a foregone conclusion that we will annex a whole other country against their will, even though we clearly have absolutely no idea what value that would bring to us.
