He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame's centennial class in 2020, and news of his death was marked by moments of silence during some of Sunday's games. His family said he passed away in Chevy Chase, Maryland as a result of heart failure. Tagliabue was 84 years old.

He was also known for establishing the "Rooney Rule," which required all teams with coaching vacancies to interview minority candidates. Tagliabue faced criticism for not taking heavier action in response to player concussions.
