As an aside, postgraduate studies promote (perhaps extreme) skepticism, an attitude sometimes lacking in some reporting.

This is probably true of many fields. It would be nice for news outlets to hire people trained in the subject matter. Maybe it'd be more effective to have subject experts trained in journalism, rather than journalists trying to learn on the job (or worse: from their interviewers).
