The very best research seminars push me to think about what I (think I) already know and tell me stuff about things I have no idea about. Sussex Politics seminar by our visiting fellow Sofya du Boulay talking about ‘Manufacturing Obedience: Media Coercion in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan’

Really interesting reseach seminar today at Sussex from @russellfoster.bsky.social on ‘Brexit and Brexit-Lit’ showing a link between novels and the contestation of Europe. Love a seminar that I leave with ideas for novels to read under the guise of research.

A big thanks to Robert Sata for the invitation to present on ‘The Power of Unpolitics’ at CEU in Vienna this week. Great to get such valuable feedback and ideas from the CEU audience.

Just wonderful to be there to see Gilsun Jeong pass his PhD viva today on Eurosceptic parties in the European Parliament and their responses to crisis. Big thanks to @nathaliebrack.bsky.social and Paul Webb for examining, and to @aleksszczerbiak.bsky.social for co-supervising with me.

One of the very best parts of my job is being part of the PhD journey of others and yesterday I was part of @robcronin.bsky.social’s viva on populism in the 2019 UK general election with @maarja.bsky.social at the University of Newcastle. Many congratulations to Rob.

Highlight of last week was annual Government/Opposition Leonard Shapiro Lecture ‘A Neuropolitical Understanding of Government and Opposition’ at University of Edinburgh by Laura Cram. The lecture was both eye opening and agenda setting on how to do politics in turbulent times.
