Recently retired, still resisting. Working for justice in public education and at large. Indy media veteran (at Public School Notebook) and media specialist. Grew up in NYC, but Philly and the Phillies won my heart. He/him.
Rob earned this. Smile!

Why is the @nytimes.com reporting that Trump is said to have a “benign condition“ without noting that CVI is actually a progressive disease? Is it that hard to point out obviously false statements?

I was just with ~100K people on the #OneMillionRising call, learning about authoritarianism & how people power & acts of noncooperation can stop the attacks on our basic rights & our democracy

Lift Every Voice Philly has filled City Council chambers today, calling for the School District to appoint a Chief of Joy to bring a positive culture shift in schools. And calling for an end to the Dirty Dozen: shaming, yelling, berating, silent lunches, no recess, no art or music, etc.

This Friday, Feb. 28, buy only from small, independent businesses, not massive companies, avoiding Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, etc.

Raise awareness of the enormous power of our collective action & set the stage for bigger future actions against the oligarchy.

It may not address the anti-colonialist critique of Woody Guthrie's lyrics, but here are a couple of suggested changes inspired by the moment.

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York island
And from Denali to the Gulf of Mexico
This land was made for you and me!

.@ingasaffron: Council's Nov 19 hearing transcripts do show SEPTA flagged need for FTA approval of Jefferson Station changes & said "SEPTA & the City must ensure no harm will be done to the federal interest. In other words, that the everyday transit user's experience has not been degraded."

Livestream from Philadelphia City Council.

In case this hasn't yet been clear, Council is facing a formidable movement that doesn't want billionaires and their cronies calling the shots in Philly.

Here are the proposed goals today. It's nice to have a higher goal for apprentice & pre-apprentice hires but what assurance is there that the jobs won't all go to journeypersons?
December 6, 2024 at 4:38 AM
It is quite remarkable & damning that the city’s goals for hiring minority & female construction workers 40 years ago on the Gallery II project were more ambitious than goals proposed now for the #arena on this very same site. A basic principle back then was that goals apply to each building trade.

Overflow crowd testifying @ City Council’s final public hearing on the arena. There’s an overflow room across the hall from Council chambers.
Dozens of speakers: The balance of testimony reflects the overwhelming opposition to this plan in the city. Will Council listen? Or cave to the billionaires?

It's that time of year. Heads up that there's a spike in COVID in PA based on wastewater detection (the only good data source right now).

The good news is that this fall's vaccine is aligned with the dominant variant. We all help each other by vaccinating and masking.

The building trades are so successful at blocking any monitoring of the makeup of their unions that the Inquirer had to reference this 2013 article for any credible data.
So we're asked to trust Boyer's claim that the trades are diversifying and this will continue.

City Council is still on the fence.

There are 5 chances to reach them: Public hearings today, 11/20, 11/21, 11/26, 12/2: Sign up to attend. OR to testify on why you oppose the arena. It would make our schools, housing, and SEPTA crises worse.

And topped off by a retrospective of the life work of Elizabeth Catlett: beautiful and powerful work by an under-recognized Black revolutionary and feminist artist. Amazing to see the progression of her work over 50+ years.
