I absolutely love supporting charity, schools & good causes with my photography (it's nice they see value in them), but wow, I've given away more prints to causes this year than I have sold. Gulp

The aurora didn't happen that night, but the amazing thing is when the moon rises (that sun like dot on the horizon) we get a 2nd 'golden hour', & that's exactly what's happening here.

Also it was a full moon, so no chance of astro photography that night.

Waiting for Aurora Australis @ Brighton Beach south of Ōtepoti Dunedin, NZ.

Summer Aurora are not rare in NZ & on a hot (23°C) evening, they're also a treat.

*this includes people who have already ordered a calendar.

Numbers will be put into a randomiser & 3 lucky folk will get a signed print. I even matt & mount them myself.

This horse chestnut tree is so old it might have been brought from the original Botanic Garden site at Otago Uni.

Beside the river, near the clocktower, the botanic garden was constantly being flooded. So in 1869, six years after inception, people transplanted what they could & started again

The bonus that morning was there were some traditional dancers practicing with fans in the Botanical Gardens - they made for great subject matter

The light was really dull that day & I wasn't sure I'd even get a shot. But I had voices in my head (not unusual) of all the photographers I've ever known 'work the shot, look compositions', so I pushed myself to see what I could get.

The colours were great & there was no wind.

Behind the calendar shot: June 2026

(final week of pre-sales)

Botanical Gardens Ōtepoti Dunedin. Autumn 'woodland' photography in NZ is really difficult because our lack of 400 year old oak forests, & abundance of evergreen native bush.

File under predictable

'none of our business', 'they're successful not like dole bludgers', 'reward for working hard' is the chorus of middle class boomers in the Herald replies at breakfast time.

They love the taste of boot polish in the morning.

Yeah mine is a bit messed up too!

I love the richness radio brings to sports coverage & commentary.

If I can’t see the game, then this is a great substitute.

I gotta say, loving having a wee slink back over to X to see all the foreign troll accounts exposed with the 'account based in' feature.

But this one made me giggle

It's not until I got to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center Smithsonian Air & Space Museum that I fully appreciated the scale of this incredible machine of science.

A story of 2 platforms & a thinly disguised free advertisement for 'Secure Canada' c/- @nationalpost.bsky.social

On X the engagement is huge, of course mainly by the racists & xenophobes... here on @bsky.app ZERO likes & not a single outraged racist & xenophobe

(still a shit article)

Finally, just as the light was getting too bright & the fog clearing, I spied this rock in the water. This is a 2 image focus stacked composite. The rock was about 3ft from my lens, so focused on that, then the island in 2nd frame.

So praying for more fog I headed back the next morning. It was freezing cold, but given how many times folk photograph it, I had the place to myself. The trouble was finding a composition that hadn't been shot before. Took me 1/2hr or more of wandering around.
