I vivdly remember when Sadiq Khan was elected Mayor of London, an older ex-cop with whom I was prepping a documentary messaged me to say "Sharia Law in London within the year". The documentary never happened, maybe I lost interest, who knows.

Mamdani's priorities seem sound.

Many years ago in the West of Ireland I spent about ten days hanging out with a bunch of brilliant filmmakers including Michael Lehmann, Trevor Griffiths and the mother of the next Mayor of NYC, the lovely Mira Nair. He would have been a toddler then. It's easy to see where he gets it.

Táinaiste, the horrific events in Drogheda over the weekend call for an immediate response from you, rowing back from your statements about the far right having ‘legitimate concerns’ about immigration. Ireland is and has always been a welcoming country for immigrants, as we should be, given our history as a country with its own diaspora. Your comments last week will be seen as providing comfort and support to those who attempted to murder those innocent women and children in Drogheda. Our country elected Catherine Connolly as President a couple of weeks ago. We showed our compassion for the poor and the helpless by electing her, and you need to pay attention to the electorate’s legitimate concerns that the tiny minority of the Far Right is being allowed to dictate Government policy via rioting and violence. Show them that they are not wanted, stand up for migrants, stand up for Ireland. If you continue to pander to the anti-migrant Right your party will become identified with them and will suffer for it at the polls next election - the people of Ireland do not want the kind of bigoted rhetoric that has become part of the fabric of public life in the UK, we are not the UK. all best wishes Paul Duane

Luckily, polling company Ireland Thinks carried out an exit poll of those who had spoiled their votes and the resulting data is a fascinating read. Of those who responded: 50% said their driver was a lack of choice or that they didn't like the candidates; 18% cited an "undemocratic process"; 12% made what was classed as a general spoiled ballot statement; 8% classed themselves as a protest/anti-Government voter; 8% expressed support for a candidate who didn't make it on to the ballot, principally barrister Maria Steen; And 5% said they acted out of frustration or called the election a "farce".

Like I said, a documentary about 2026 in the USA.
Peter Watkins with a cast of non-actors and less than 100,000 dollars painted a searing indictment of the USA of the time, and in 2025t this feels like a desperate unheeded warning of what's to come. Stark is the word, set in the sweltering killer heat of the California desert, with its barren landscape, the themes of cold, dehumanising violence. A USA that has completely collapsed into fascism, choosing now to deal with its perceived hidden, domestic enemies; the idealists; the revolutionaries; the deserters; anyone deemed somehow subversive to the militaristic fascist cause of the US of A. These people are forced to either accept a draconian prison sentence or Punishment Park. Punishment Park meaning, if you can walk across the Californian desert without food or water to an American flag in three days, you will be freed.
