Are UK medics unusual in not having any sort of professional identification when they are not expecting to need any? What should we have with us for this scenario?

I guess it couldn't have been anything that serious. One of the other UK medics eventually resorted to showing them something on his laptop, not sure what, or whether they accepted it.

The flight attendant asked to see my "medical licence" and seemed very suspicious that I did not have one. I have Dr on my passport but they told me that could be a doctor of something else. They had already turned down help from other UK doctors on board as none had any proof.
