If only we had some kind of person whose job it was to investigate the news and present a balanced set of challenging facts. We could call them something like “journalists”. The whole craft could be called a cool name like “journalism”.

Every major programme of change in nation states suffers from optimism bias. Layers of bureaucracy, politics, power, money all combine to create the modern day equivalent of the Emperor’s New Clothes. The system doesn’t “know” and individuals feel out of step so time after time we rinse and repeat.

So many fundamental misconceptions about how the world actually worked, and how it might turn out even worse than expected. All of the flags should have gone red with the reality gap at the NI/RoI border back in 2016/17. But optimism bias is just a permanent state of mind.

As a child of the 70s I think I remember candles during power cuts, I think I remember my dads British Leyland Maxi rusting very quickly, and I think i remember driving to Spain in 1977 on holiday and trying foods and culture that opened my eyes to a place called “Europe”.

PS think the US and EU would actually enjoy laughing / punching down on a UK once again thinking it could do what it wants internationally, one of the few things on which they agree and could distract from their own problems for a while.
