An unlikely story by J L Carr, How Steeple Sinderby Wanderers Won the F A Cup. Recommended for #NovellasinNovember, it's more about village politics than football so don't be put off by the title. As usual with J L Carr its a bit sad, a bit happy, a bit funny and a bit wise. A great read.

Here are a few suggestions from my Readers Companion to the Twentieth Century Novel.

Also from my own collection is the classic noir The Killer Inside Me by Jim Thompson.

First Hairy-footed flower bees today, Hunmanby, 1 male, 1 female. Male brown with white face female all black. Pulmonaria or Green alkanet are plants they like. Very active love to see them whizzing around flowers. Pics not this year. I’ll have to carry my camera from now on.

My second hoverfly of the year. Dronefly (Eristalis tenax) feeding on a crocus, seen at Troutsdale in North Yorkshire. Also saw two Goshawk in the same area, but no photos. Spring has just started for me 😀

A lovely sunny day, so insect season has arrived in Hunmanby. My first hoverfly of the year. A Marmalade hoverfly that has overwintered, feeding on a Sarcococca plant. Also several Buff-tailed bumblebees were feeding on heather.

This is one of my favourite hoverflies, Chrysotoxum festivum. Quite widespread in England & Wales. Very recognisable, usually seen feeding on flowers, spring & summer.

Buff Arches is an odd looking moth. Looks like something has taken a bite out of its wings. If you look closely you'll see that it hasn't. A nighttime moth flies July & August. Quite common in England & Wales. Larvae feed on bramble.
