SCRAP in pdx often has good stuff but ymmv because thrift store. there are some good deadstock boutiques around town but those are usually $$$. Rose City Textiles used to be great but they shut down. Pendleton Woolen Mills outlet store in Milwaukie has seconds and offcuts and all sorts of stuff!

echoing Wawak for notions, Burnley & Trowbridge for well-curated historical-reenactment-grade fabrics (a bit pricey), and Fashion Fabrics Club for deadstock super cheap (kind of a gamble; fabrics can deviate from the description sometimes - i always burn/bleach test asap upon receipt from them)

scale based on how many fucks you have to give at time of making: add (fresh) ginger, garlic (both fresh/powder), and a pinch of sugar to what's already been shared

depending on the rice, chinese 5-spice powder might be interesting but it's bold so be careful

As someone who has never once had need for a urinal, upon learning of the cakes' existence, my fully adult self's first reaction was envy (why don't *I* get cake!?), followed by quite earnestly asking what flavor they were. It has gone down in infamy.
