Glasgow then and now
The last image shows the station in the 70s as it approached the end of its life, demolished in 1979 and replaced by the new Partick station on the opposite side of Dumbarton Rd.

The second view shows the station in the mid-60s with one of the standard footbridges constructed by P & W MacLellan, and one of the electric trains built by the Pressed Steel Company for the scheme.

It closed in 1979 when it was replaced by the new Partick Station on the opposite side of Dumbarton Road, where underground, rail and bus services were connected at the Partick Interchange. The Partickhill Station buildings were demolished in 1997.

Union St has different problems. The protracted nonsense over the Egyptian Halls leaves it in dilapidated limbo, but it's probably always going to be a main road artery out of the city. Part pedestrianise it, ban cars, narrow the roadway, buses only.

The Barras is great. It used to be one thing, now it's another. Don't go there if you're expecting patter merchants chucking turkey legs at pensioners. But if you're looking for antiques or the best noodles in the city, it's your place.

It'll take time, but it'll have it's day again. I took the 9A from Nitshill to the Uni in the mid-90s and if you'd told me in 1994 as I sat on that bus passing the Creme de la Creme at Finnieston that this was going to be one of the trendiest areas in the city I'd have laughed.

I recently dug out some similar contemporary sourness around the pedestrianisation of Buchanan St. People, it seems, are never happier than when they're moaning about something.

After a fire destroyed the auditorium in 1953 it was rebuilt at a cost of £112,000. It reopened in 1956 but only lasted another 5 years before the wrecking balls moved in. It was demolished in 1961 to be replaced by the 17 storey St Andrew House.

Having already commissioned a building from Baird & Thomson, the Central Halls Co quickly incorporated a theatre, designed by a young Frank Matcham, into their new development.

Was just chatting with Niall on "the other place" who posits that it might be Moorov peering out the window to the right. For such a notorious character, he appears to have been quite camera shy.

It's still with us today, and in better nick than ever thanks to a 2022 refurbishment project supported by @glasgowheritage.bsky.social It's had a few different names over the years, including Gamp's, a Charles Dickens themed music bar.
