Oh we’ll just get Austin Wintory to work with Darren Korb and conduct an orchestra for our epic Olympus boss fight nbd.

Yeah I loved a lot of the elements in ONI in particular but failing after 50 hours of investment is a pretty brutal mastery loop experience. It kind of breaks the engagement with the game when that happens.

Can you give a couple of examples of the games you’re talking about? A lot of games that are typically called survival actually stabilize to super low risk states over the course of progression.

Yeah, maybe ways to provide intermittent feedback of continued safety can help. Like calm barks. Or in a multiplayer context, some sort of pattern of passive player behavior that can be heard or inferred as a positive stealth feedback pattern. Also things like overlooks are good as payoff feedback.

I think a lot of it comes down to creating patterns where the player realizes they’ve transitioned from just moving through a safe space to sneaking through a dangerous space, so the player shifts expectations before anything actually happens.

I mean it’s not so much trust as significantly increased design burden on inferable systems and writing and environmental affordances and navigability. I can assure you just stripping waypoints from most games is not a satisfying discovery experience without this execution.

when you examine a text written by a human you can find layers and layers of meaning and intentionality, the complexity of the human conscious, an opportunity for one mind to commune with another outside the bounds of time and space. when you examine AI text you drown in a teaspoon of nothing.

Sounds from the article more like server firing/damage events happen off the client and overall dps falls off. Which still sounds pretty janky
